Shatranj Ke Khiladi (“The Chess Players”)

On Sunday, September 24, 2017, the Doyle Program kicked off the 2017-18 academic year’s program events with a screening of Shatranj Ke Khiladi (“The Chess Players”), hosted in conjunction with Doyle faculty fellow Shareen Joshi (School of Foreign Service). Directed by Satyajit Ray, Shatranj Ke Khiladi (“The Chess Players”) is based on the Munshi Premchand short story by the same name. Set in 1856, the film centers on two noblemen chess players and the machinations of the East India Trading Company on the eve of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Joshi hosted a post-film discussion over dinner with attendees, exploring many issues raised in the film, including gender relations in Indian society, religion and politics, and British colonial rule.
