Gianni Cicali is an associate professor in the Department of Italian at Georgetown University and a specialist in the history of Italian theater. His interests focus on Italian theater, opera, and culture from the 15th to the 18th century, Renaissance and Baroque religious theater, and cinema. He is the author of a book on the Italian "opera buffa" based on textual and archive research, entitled Attori e ruoli nell'opera buffa italiana del Settecento (2005).
