A Relational Understanding of Human Rights: Human Dignity in Social Solidarity

Author: David Hollenbach

July 18, 2022

Published in Emory Law Journal, Senior Fellow Rev. David Hollenbach, S.J., contributes to a Festschrift honoring the work of Georgetown graduate Michael J. Perry (C'68). Hollenbach focuses on human rights and its influence in shaping global political order and morality. His essay tackles recent criticisms of human rights as excessively individualistic and makes a substantive argument for what can be called a relational understanding of human rights. He concludes that such an understanding of human rights can be genuinely universal and can address key issues that arise in today’s world where the West and the Global South are increasingly interdependent.
