Performing Identity
Identity: we use this word every day. But what is an identity, and how has our contemporary understanding of this concept been forged through theatrical performance? Pairing key theoretical and critical texts with play and performance texts, this class explored how theatrical performance reflects, refracts, and refutes our contemporary understanding of identity. The fraught relationship between texts and bodies was a key site of its investigation. Class members thought on their feet, as well as on the page, by performing, writing, and reading critically. This course (ENGL 427) was taught by Jennifer Fink as a Doyle Seminar (small upper-level classes that foster deepened student learning about diversity and difference through research and dialogue).
